I
use a brush to apply stain for most decks. This forces the coating into
the pores and tiny wood crevices to better seal the surface for a longer lasting job. Spraying can cause damage to shrubs and
over spray can get on the house or any cars in the area― so I avoid it. I can't give a price over the internet but I can give you some idea of the total cost of some recent decks I've done this year. The average price for power washing and
a staining deck in good condition that is approximately 10 x 15 feet to 10
x25 feet would be in the range of $475 to $775. This includes a consultation/estimate and materials.

• New decks that have never been stained should go with name brand products such as Cabot's, Sherwin-Williams Deckscapes or Olympic Stains.
• If your deck has already been stained it's best to stay with the same product to get the same results (the only time you would switch products is if the product failed or was reformulated).
• In Winter it's best not to shovel snow off your deck as shoveling can damage the wood. Use a bristle broom to sweep the snow off and never use rock salt on your deck.
• Every deck has a life cycle. When wood is new and in good shape, transparent coatings are used to bring out the beauty. As decks get older and start to succumb to the elements, they usually require a pigmented semi- transparent coating. When decks really start to age they require solid stains to hide the years.
